Getting started

Obsidian Comic Reader reads comic archive files (.cbz and .cbr) that you supply. There are four ways to add them:

  1. Files picker: tap the … menu in the toolbar, choose Import Comics, and select files from anywhere the Files app can reach. (On an empty library there's an Import Comics button front and center.)
  2. Open from anywhere: tap a .cbz/.cbr file in the Files app, Mail, or Safari downloads and open it in Obsidian Comic Reader; it's added to your library automatically.
  3. Drop into the app folder: using the Files app or a Mac Finder window, copy .cbz/.cbr files straight into the app's folder.
  4. iCloud Drive sync (optional): turn on sync in Settings, then add comics to the Obsidian Comic Reader folder in your iCloud Drive on any device and they appear in your library.

Once imported, your library groups issues into series automatically, tracks reading progress, and lets you browse as a grid, collapsed series, or expandable shelves.

Frequently asked questions

What file types are supported?

Comic book archives: CBZ (ZIP-based) and CBR (RAR-based). The app does not include any comics itself; you provide your own files.

How do I read two-page spreads?

Rotate your iPad to landscape while reading. Double-page art is shown as a spread. Pinch any page to zoom into panels and lettering.

Where are my comics stored?

On your device, and (if you enable sync) in your own iCloud Drive under your Apple Account. The developer has no access to them.

Does the app collect any data?

No. There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads, and no tracking. See the Privacy Policy.

My iCloud comics aren't appearing.

Make sure iCloud Drive is enabled on the device and that sync is turned on in the app's Settings, then add files to the Obsidian Comic Reader folder in iCloud Drive. Syncing can take a moment depending on file size and connection.

Is there a sample file I can try?

Yes, a public-domain-safe test comic: download sample-comic.cbz. Save it, then import it with the steps above.
